CHAPTER 12
A tour of the offices and a meet and greet with the staff were the start of Monday morning for Kerri at the North Beach Observer. Her first individual assignment was set for her second day as Steph had insisted she take the first day to get settled in and tag along with one of the other reporters. Kerri was terrible with names and after being introduced to the staff of close to 40 people, she started to wonder if she would know her own name by the end of the day.
She spent the morning break making small talk with Julia, the junior reporter she had met the day she arrived for her interview, and they hit it off immediately. âSo, Steph says I should tag along with someone this afternoon. See how you guys operate,â Kerri said as she was about to leave the staff room. âI donât really know anyone else, soâ¦â
âThat sounds cool. I have a news conference at 1:30, you could come along.â Julia replied.

âItâs okay, we have a couple of minutes.â Julia laughed, running her hand over her head to brush her chin-length red hair out of her eyes. âGet your stuff, the press conference starts in 30. Should be a good one. The police are giving an update on a homicide case from last month. I have a theory that it is connected to another killing last year.â
Kerri smiled and threw on her coat. âWow. That will be a first for me. We didnât exactly have a lot of crime in Jenkinstown. Certainly, never had the chance to cover a murder.â She grabbed her camera bag and had to practically jog through the office to keep up with Julia.
The car ride was mostly silent, and Kerriâs thoughts slipped back to the text message from the night before. Iâm home, we will talk soon? Kerri wanted to talk now. She had been consumed with thoughts of the
